U.S. and Canadian Citizens Must Show Documents that Prove Citizenship and Identity

Effective January 31, 2008 U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 19 and older will need to show proof of their citizenship and identity. For many this will mean traveling with both a birth certificate and driver's license unless the traveler holds other acceptable documents .

Examples of acceptable documents that show either identity or citizenship - you must travel with one of each.

Bring one of the following documents that shows identity:

  • Driver's license or official ID card
  • U.S. or Canadian military ID card
AND bring one of the following documents that shows citizenship:

  • U.S. or Canadian official birth certificates
  • U.S. Consular report of birth abroad
  • U.S. certificate of naturalization
  • U.S. citizen ID card
  • Canadian certificate of citizenship w/o photo
OR

The following documents are accepted without the need to show any other document:
  • U.S. or Canadian passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • SENTRI, NEXUS, or FAST trusted traveler cards
  • State or provincial issued enhanced driver's license that denote identity and citizenship
  • U.S. Military ID with Military travel orders
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Document
  • Native American tribal photo ID card
  • Form I-872 American Indian card
  • Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Card (INAC)
