The purpose of the U.S. Embassy Citizens Consular Services is to serve and protect American citizens while they are abroad. Their services include passport applications, notarial services and emergency services in case of death, arrest or destitution.
The U.S. Embassy strongly recommends filling out their registration form if you will be traveling in Mexico for any length of time. By registering you will receive urgent communication and a quarterly newsletter.
The Bureau of Consular Affairs has put together a Consular Information Sheet on a wide variety of topics for citizens visiting Mexico including safety issues, health information, and criminal penalties.

The Canadian Embassy's duties include general services to Canadians abroad such as passport applications, citizenship, and emergency services.
Registration is recommended for Canadians traveling abroad. The embassy will be able to contact and help you in case there is the necessity.
